The International Business Correspondence of L. Kniffler & Co. (1859-1876): A Digital Edition
L. Kniffler & Co. was founded in 1859 in Nagasaki by the Prussian merchant Louis Kniffler (1827-1888). It was one of the first European trading houses to be established in Japan after the shogunate abandoned its isolationist policy, and within a few years it had become one of the largest. The digital edition of the international business correspondence of L. Kniffler & Co. (1859-1876) is the first attempt to publish the company's business correspondence in its entirety, as it has been preserved in the archive of its legal successor, C. Illies & Co.
The project was carried out at the Department of Japanese History, Ruhr University Bochum, from 2018 to 2021. The edition is based on the TEI Publisher framework and contains 156 documents with structural and semantic annotations.
This presentation will focus on the key features of the digital edition, which include a parallel view of the transcription, English translation, and facsimile image, as well as an extensive annotation apparatus for persons, companies, and vessels. Future improvements to the edition and research approaches may be discussed.
L. クニフラー商会(L. Kniffler & Co.)の国際的商業書簡(1859-1876)のデジタル版
L. クニフラー商会は、1859年、プロイセン商人のルイ・クニフラー（1827-1888）によって長崎で設立されました。幕府が鎖国政策を廃止した後、日本に最初に設立されたヨーロッパ系商社の一つで、数年のうちに最大規模の商社となりました。L.クニフラー商会の国際商業書簡（1859-1876）のデジタル版は、同社の法的後継者であるイリーズ商会のアーカイブに保存されている商業書簡の全文を公開する初の試みです。
本プロジェクトは、2018年から2021年にかけて、ルール大学ボーフムの日本史学科で実施されました。このデジタル版はTEI Publisherのフレームワークに基づいており、構造的・意味的な注釈が付けられた156の文書が含まれています。
本発表では、デジタル版の主な特徴である転写、英訳、ファクシミリ画像の並列表示及び人物・企業・船舶の注釈装置について紹介します。また、今後の改良点、研究方法についても言及する予定です。
